Cruelty-free makeup not only is more compassionate to animals, but also can contain ingredients that are less harsh to the human body, too. Here we’ll unpack what cruelty-free means, and share some indie (independent) brands that are doing their part to produce cruelty-free beauty products.

What Does Cruelty-Free Mean?

Cruelty-free means that the product and its ingredients meet certain standards that include not testing on animals. There are a variety of certifications that brands can carry to indicate their products are cruelty-free, such as Leaping Bunny, Beauties Without Bunnies, Choose Cruelty Free, and Certified Vegan.

Cruelty-Free and Indie Makeup Brands

Indie brands typically have no outside elements of control, such as parent companies or investors. The owners usually have “sole proprietorship,” meaning they can make all decisions themselves. The following brands are cruelty-free and indie, and are worth checking out!

Black Moon Cosmetics

Black Moon Cosmetics has been creating cruelty-free and vegan beauty products since 2015, starting with their original liquid lipstick. The brand is “inspired by the mysteriously magical moon and all its emanating beauty,” thus their moody products dawn unique names like Aquarius, Armageddon, and Ashes.

What to Try:
Deville Gothic Lipstick
Orb of Light™ - Full Moon Palette

Āether Beauty

This indie brand was founded by Tiila Abbitt, a former Sephora employee who is passionate about sustainability in the beauty industry. What's more, when you purchase Āether Beauty’s products a portion of sales benefit environmental charities.

What to Try:
Limited Edition Supernova Crushed Yellow Diamond Highlighter
Joshua Tree Palette
Concrete Minerals

This high-end, vegan, and cruelty-free mineral cosmetics line believes that less is more when it comes to ingredients. They promise to ditch the boring and offer unique twists to typical beauty products.

What to Try:
The Vertigo Collection Eyeshadows
Phantasm Lip Tint
Dose of Colors

Created in 2013 by a freelance makeup-artist, Dose of Colors focuses on developing user friendly, functional, and trendy products.

What to Try:
Foundation
Truffle Liquid Matte Lipstick

Shroud Cosmetics

This brand is a one woman show, made in the USA. The founder Chloe started the company when she was just 16 years old, and has since built a unique brand with high quality and animal friendly products.

What to Try:
Dark Hearts 2 Eyeshadow Trio
Creepy Cute Eyeshadow Palette
Shopping cruelty-free indie makeup is rewarding because you are not only avoiding unnecessary animal harm, but also supporting businesses that are smaller and less mainstream.
