Makeup Trends for Spring 2020
Makeup this spring will be anything but boring. Imagine your face as a canvas for expressive, glittery, and colourful artwork. Get out of your comfort zone and check out these spring makeup trends, along with ideas on how to put them into practice.
First, let’s talk about colour. This spring will be all about neons, pastels, and bright colors. Even shades of yellow aren’t off the table. Achieve the look by using colours to outline your eyes, paint the whole lid, or mix and match contrasting colours on the top and the bottom of your eyes.
As mentioned it’s time to get comfortable with colour on the eyes, especially blue. This spring we will see all sorts of blue shades across the lids, including mint, pastel, electric, peacock, and royal. You can opt for a monochromatic look that reaches up to your eyebrows, or simply outline the top and bottom of the eyes with the same shade. Either way, these hues are extremely flattering and will no doubt compliment spring fashion.
Are you ready for red? If you thought red lips were just for the holidays, think again. This spring we are getting back to the basics with classic red lips. From candy apple red to more moody tones, like burgundy wine, it’s hard to get this look wrong. Just consider making your eyes a bit more neutral to pair with a statement lip. Keep in mind that reds can either have a cool tone or warm tone, so experiment which one vibes the best with your skin.
Don’t hold back on blush. Whether it’s because of the rise of K-Beauty or the TikTok “e-girl” trend, we are seeing a ton of blush this season. Try layering powdered blush on wet blush to achieve a look that will last all day. Blush always seems to fade from the face first, so don’t be afraid to put on a tad extra before you go out. Also, experiment with location. Placing blush higher than usual on the cheek bones gives a youthful glow, and don’t forget to blush up the centre of your nose where the sun naturally hits.
Embellishment
Makeup embellishment hit the mainstream in a big way with the popularity of the show Euphoria. Everyone was talking about the show’s makeup-with-no-rules looks. Now we are seeing pearls, crystals, face paints, and foils adorn the face everywhere this spring. Although a bit avant-garde for daily wear, this look could be a great option for special occasions like concerts, festivals, holidays, or celebrations.
Glitter
Sparkle and shine all season long with glitter. Put it all over your eyelids for a quick easy look or, if you’re feeling daring, try out some more unusual placements. We’re seeing glitter along the highest points of cheekbones, along eyebrows, and even across nose bridges. Just like the embellishment trend, glitter can be a bit much for an everyday look, but believe it or not it’s very possible to wear glitter in a subtle way. To achieve this, go for a glitter with a translucent base and white, brown, or cream reflections. Apply a thin layer just above your eyeliner for a hint of sparkle that brings out the flecks in your eyes.
Basic eyeliner is out and eyeliner 2.0 is in. The name of the game here is to go for something unique. Achieve the look with brightly coloured eyeliner, liquid eyeliner, or even eyeliner stickers. The shape can be anything from an asymmetrical graphic to a “suspended” line in your crease. It’s worth noting that white liquid eyeliner specifically is having a moment.
